We had just gotten home from a week of vacation in the sun. Tired, and basking in memories, I was unpacking our vacation first aid kit.

I turned my back for what felt like seconds, and came back to find Connor, a toddler at the time, had found an old bottle of prescription medicine in our kit. He had somehow opened the bottle and the contents were all over the floor. “I found candy!” He exclaimed. My heart sank, as I sprung into action to take the necessary steps to ensure his safety and health.

Connor had not ingested any medication yet, and he easily could have within seconds. Drug overdoses and misuse can be prevented through safe storage and properly discarding unused or outdated medication. According to the CDC, on average 234 Americans die every day from a drug overdose (Jan- March 2021, CDC). From that day on, I ensured that we kept all of our prescription and over-the-counter medications high up, in a closed container, and only kept the medications that we used.

LifeInCheck created a Consumer Drug Take-Back program that provides you with a safe option to discard your unused or outdated prescription medications in secure receptacles located across the United States. There are kiosks located within stores where you can drop off your medications to keep them out of the hands of children and dispose of medications safely. Learn from my mistake and regularly check your medicine cabinet for used or outdated medications that could prevent anyone-including your children from having access to them.

While I was visiting Hi School Pharmacy in Estacada, Oregon to drop off our expired medications, a lady behind me asked, “What are those green boxes for? I visit this store weekly and have never known!” I explained that anyone can bring used and outdated medications to these kiosks to dispose of them safely. She replied, “That kiosk could have saved my nephews life. Thank you for educating the community, and saving others.”

Join me on April 24th, National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, and drop off your unused or outdated medications at your closest location. Find your nearest kiosk here
